LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Epiletic Power Supply And Huge Bills

On behalf of residents of Iboko Street and its environs, here in Uyo, the state capital, I make this urgent request to the Power Holding Company of Nigeria, PHCN, to restore power supply to the above mentioned areas which have been without power supply for more than three weeks now. One would have thought that in a capital city such as ours, power supply would be regular, yet we only enjoy this all important commodity only few days to payment of monthly bills.
Immediately a greater percentage of these bills are paid, we return to darkness until the following month. This has caused most residents to rely their attendant health hazard and noise pollution. mostly on generating sets despite their attendant health hazard and noise pollution. I therefore call on PHCN to please live up to their responsibility and give us our due.

Mrs. Iniobong Sylvester, Uyo.

A Case To Rehabilitate Mentally Sick People

The mentally deranged persons are really comfortable in Uyo metropolis, maybe because they are not shown their proper place or there is no agency responsible for their welfare. This unfortunate development has generated a lot of criticism from people and their argument is that with the current status quo it is difficult to make Akwa Ibom State a destination. With lunatics scattered all over the place, it is difficult to imagine the transformation envisaged by the government. I suggest government should do something about the lunatics on streets and save the pedestrians the danger of rape, harassment and other forms of attack.
The mentally sick people are fond of littering our streets with faeces and rubbish and this portrays our state in bad light. The ministry of Women Affairs and social welfare should discharge its duties effectively. We refuse to be silent while the
mentally sick persons threaten our very existence, turning themselves into a nuisance to our businesses. It is high time, something is done about removing them to rehabilitation centres or lunatic asylum for proper treatment. This will save us further inconveniences, and create a guaranteed peaceful atmosphere for all residents of Uyo.

Nsikak Udo, Uyo.
