Concretizing Our Democratic Governance
There is no doubt that democracy has come to stay in Nigeria. It was the military junta under the leadership of Gen Abdulsalami Abubakar (rtd) which deemed it wise to hand over power to a democratically elected civilian administration in 1999.
In a world that military intervention in the political processes of nations was becoming somewhat out of fashion, the hand over of power by the military after an uninterrupted spell of 16 years dating between 1983 and 1999 was indeed a big leap forward.
Having at the back of our mind the fact that the worst form of democracy is better than the most benevolent military dictatorship, we are highly elated by the fact that our democratic ship is still on course.
Consequently, we passionately enjoin all stakeholders to contribute their quota and strengthen the political experiment which has had its ups and downs within this span of time so far.
In this connection, it is imperative for our politicians and those who have been saddled with the responsibility of steering the ship of state to spare a thought and ensure that they behave responsibly and exhibit exemplary character with a view to motivating the populace to have confidence in our nation and her political leadership.
It therefore becomes imperative to strive to re-invent our nation and bring it out from the morass of socio-political and economic stagnation, decay and other negative manifestations.
