The Akwa Ibom State government and other stakeholders in the education sector have been called upon to throw their weight
behind the only private university in the South- East region of the Niger Delta, Obong University. The chairman, Board of trustees of the institution, Prof. Moses Akpanudo who made the call while addressing the inaugural meeting of the university's Think Tank team at Obong, in Etim Ekpo local government area stated that Obong Varsity is among the one hundred and four Universities licenced in the country by the national Universities Commission. He noted that the Obong University has become available at a time when the existing universities in this part of the country were unable to cope with the number of Nigerians seeking admission into universities and posited that the institution is positively positioned to support the Akwa Ibom State government free education programme. Prof. Akpanudo disclosed that the university faculties of National and Applied Science as well as the management and social sciences are equipped to offer admission to 500 qualified beneficiaries of the free education scheme from the next academic year. The proprietor of Obong University envisaged that all Nigerians, rich or poor should be given the opportunity to get university education and appealed to government at all level, investors, business enterprises including banks to come forward and join hands to develop Obong University which has the potentials of becoming one of he leading centres of learning in Nigeria. At the end of the inauguration and an interactive session, the Think Tank Team agreed to call for public support for the university to enable it play an effective role in solving the current problem of university admissions, at least in the South South and South eastern part of the country in general and Akwa Ibom State in particular. They expressed appreciation to the Akwa Ibom State government for providing an enabling environment including good roads to the university as well as water supply and power which the Think Tank said are necessary for a conducive learning environment. The team called on the Akwa Ibom State government and other state governments in the South eastern part of the country, to also support Obong University in areas of needs such as equipment, books, grants-in-aid while running their universities since according to them the number of Nigerians seeking admissions into universities is limitless. It note with gratitude, the contributions of private bodies and individuals in Nigeria and the United States of America who have made donations in materials and money to the university since it was established about three years ago. The Think Tank team is made of accomplished professionals, businessmen, university professors and administrators. Those with attended the meeting were the chairman and pro-Chancellor of the University, Professor Ime Ben Umoh, the Vice Chancellor, Professor Enefiok Udo, the registrar, Mr. Imo Akpanudo, the proprietor of Top faith group of Schools, Dr. Emmanuel Abraham, Mr. Moses F. Epo, a Public Affairs Consultant and Journalists and Abong Efiremfom Ukoka, a businessman. Others were, Professor Amanam Udo, a retired don of the University of Calabar Rev. Professor Udo Anwana, Professor Etim Udoessien, Dr. Godwin Udosen, Dr. Enomfon Akpan, all of the University of Uyo. Two representatives of the Annang Community in the Rivers State, Mr. Innocent Usoro and Mr. Friday Obong also attended the meeting.
