The Cross Lines Limited, managers of Cross River State Transport Corporation is to spend over N1.8 billion Naira to overhaul its operations in line with the transport sector
reforms in the state. It is also to acquire additional 500 vehicles to increase its fleet in addition to the over 400 already in its inter and intra city operations. Managing Director of the company, Deacon Charles Ibok Effanga, disclosed this to newsmen in his office recently. According to him “ out of this additional 500 vehicles, 200 will ply as taxis while 300 will be used as buses within the state capital to increase the existing fleets provided by the three major licensed operators in the state. Deacon Effanga who commended the state government for introducing taxis and bus schemes within the city, said by the end of this month, Cross Lines would have finally put the additional taxis and buses on the road. He regretted that there are not enough taxis and buses adding “as soon as we receive our fleets, the present hardship being experienced by commuters will be solved.” Deacon Effanga appealed to commuters in the state to bear with the state government adding that “with what government has put in place, transport situation will improve”. He said that as the flagship of transportation business in the state,” our mission statement and target is to assist other major stakeholders to provide efficient, affordable and reliable transportation business in the state.” He declared “the state government has set a standard by giving franchise to well organized and competent transport operators in the state and as a government parastatal, we must maintain that standard and tempo”. On the issue of discipline, he said the management meets with the drivers twice every month to advise them on how to deal with members of the public especially while on the wheels. Our drivers and over 147 staffers are well disciplined and committed to duty and we are proud by the reports we receive from members of the public. In answer to another question, he said, “presently if you wake up early in the morning and drive along the streets, you will agree with me that there is need to increase the fleet of taxis and buses in order to alleviate the sufferings of the masses.” He said that all the stakeholders are committed to close this gap within the shortest possible time. The Managing Director commended the State Governor, Senator Liyel Imoke, for abolishing the commercial motorcycles within the state capital and the introduction of clean taxi cabs and buses because of our tourism potentials.
