Residents in Eastern Obolo coastal community have reported an oil spill incident at Total Exploration and Production Nigeria Limited oil field off Akwa Ibom coastline.
Members of the community told our correspondent on Wednesday that fishermen sighted crude oil deposits on the waters during fishing expedition on Monday.
The oil deposits reportedly landed at the coastline on Wednesday.
“Our fishermen noticed oil on the high sea a few days ago precisely on Monday during fishing activity and aborted the exercise to find the source of the pollution,
“The oil was later traced to a leakage from Odudu platform located off the Atlantic coastline. Our people have reported the development to the communities who will in turn take it up with Total,” Effiong Ekong a fisherman said.
When contacted on the development, Mr Irvine Obot, Zonal Director of National Oil Spills Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA) in Uyo said that the agency was yet to receive a report of the incident from Total.
Obot said that the agency would verify the claims made by the fishermen and would deploy its staff to the site and collect samples for further tests and analysis.
Mr Charles Ebereonwu, Manager in Charge of External Communications of Total declined comment on the oil leak incident when contacted our correspondent on telephone.
He however pledged to respond in a formal statement in due course.
