Police Arrest 2 In Abak Over Fraud PDF Print E-mail

Two persons including a retired soldier have been arrested for impersonation and fraud. The culprits, major Tony Inuaeyen (rtd) and Mr. George Moses were arrested on Monday for defrauding Lance Corporal Sunday Jack Akpan (rtd) of the sum of N300.000. They are currently being held at Abak-Divisional Police Headquarters.
The Sensor learnt that Mr. George Moses had on November 8, 2011, posed as a staff of Etisalat Mobile communication and in company of Major Inuaeyen approached the victim and defrauded him the sum of N280,000 on the pretext that they facilities the installation of Etisalt mast in his land. We further gathered that the said money was an advanced payment of N377,000 which was for the land survey and certificate of ownership[ of the said land.
After the initial payment of the advance money, the alleged fraudsters went back to the victim and collected an additional N20,000, making it a total of N300,000 with a promise that the telecom industry will install the mast on January 16, 2012.
However, luck ran out of the fraudsters when they failed to install the mast but insisted on collecting the balance payment N77,000, a situation that attracted suspicion. The eagle eye policemen were therefore intimated of the crime and they were arrested at the premises of Ecobank, Abak branch when they went to collect the balance.
Speaking to The Sensor, the victim, lance Corporal Sunday Jack Akpan (rtd) who is also the chief security officer of Ecobank, Abak branch said he trusted his retired college when the latter sold the idea of giving his land for use by the telecom giant. This, he said was a betrayal of trust and demanded that full weight of the law be visited on major Iseyen.
The Nung Ikot Okusung, Oruk Anam local government born retired soldier said he has lost his hard earn income to a friend he had trusted and pleaded on anti-graft agencies help him recover his money.
Meanwhile, management of the Etisalat telecommunication in Uyo has denied having Mr. George Moses as one of its staff. Speaking to our reporter via phone, a staff of Etisalat Company who pleaded not to be named said the company do not deal with agents to render their services to the public. He warned members of the public to beware of fraudsters who parades themselves as agents.
When contacted the state police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Onyeka Orji said he is yet to be briefed on the incident. He however promised to reach back to our reporter as soon as he got details of the alleged crime.
