The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) yesterday suspended its 60 day old strike which led to the shutting down of universities across the nation.
In a statement after a meeting of the National Executive Council at Labour House, Abuja, the National President of ASUU, Professor Ukachukwu Awuzie said based on the renewed commitment made by the federal government to begin the implementation of the agreement between ASUU and the federal government in 2009, universities teachers should return to work.
According to Professor Awuzie, government has agreed to begin the implementation of a robust plan aimed at improving teaching, research and learning in universities as stipulated in the 2009 agreement.
He said government has agreed to release about N400 billion to universities to begin the required improvement in infrastructure and research stating that it promised to follow this up with another N100 billion yearly.
Also, the government according to the ASUU president is now willing to allocate 26% of total annual budget to education as required by the United Nations.
In his view these promises and the new legislation raising age of retirement for professors to 70 years are signs of government’s willingness to honour the 2009 agreement.
Professor Awuzie added that the implementation of the 2009 agreement will certainly uplift the quality of learning in the universities.

so many promises by the government and most have not been fulfilled. In the case of this issue, measures have to be carried out efficiently and major infrastructures has to be put in place in order to satisfy the students' needs. Target shuouldn't be unrealistic, so whatever the government wants to do should be realistic in order to be able to do it.
