The removal on Monday by the Justice Ogbojor Ogar presided High Court in Calabar of the Obong of Calabar,Edidem Ekpo Okon Abasi Otu has attracted the 'ire' of the Etuboms Traditional Council[Council of King makers] as the Chairman of the council,Etubom Bassey Oko Bassey Duke Tuesday said the Council will appeal the judgment.
Duke who addressed Journalists in a prepared speech before a retinue of other Etuboms and royal fathers of Efik kingdom at the royal palace along Anderson street, said the Efik throne was still intact inspite of the situation of the court order adding that the council will launch out on appeal.
Hear him:‘’you will recall that Calabar was the host of the Supreme and Appeal Courts in Nigeria, and following in this tradition, we are firm believers in the rule of law,the right to fair hearing, transparency, due process, equity, fairness, truth and adherence to peaceable conduct even in the face of extremely provocative action. We therefore await the full text of that ruling before deciding on the appropriate course of action.’’
The royal father appealed to all sons and daughters of Efik kingdom ’’both at home and in the diaspora, the good people of Calabar, our kith and kin and all people of goodwill to remain calm on this apparently disturbing, unsettling and sensational news particularly in these very tense and volatile times of social and political upheaval in the life our nation,Nigeria.’’
Reaffirming that the Obong’s stool is within the authority of the Etubom’s Traditional Council.Etubom Duke said the appeal for calm was necessary to ensure that the existing peaceful climate in the kingdom is sustained to allow the episode pass away.
It would be recalled that in 2008 the Obongship stool was thrown into confusion following the controversy which arising from the enthronement of another Obong shortly after the demise of the former,Edidem Nta Elijah Henshaw.
Chief Anthony Ani had dragged the dethroned Efik monarch Edidem Abasi Out as well as the Etubom’s Traditional Council to court following what he alleged as wrongful selection of the Obong
