No fewer than seven Principals of public secondary schools in Cross River state may be sacked over financial scam.
The State Secondary Education Board has already concluded investigations whereupon it realised that these principals are heavily indebted to government because of unremitted school fees for about two academic sessions.
Already the names of the affected principals have remained a secret by the board but the Chairman Dr (Mrs.) Sylvia A. Atsu said in a meeting with the Co-ordinating Supervisory Directors (CSDS) Executive Secretaties of Local Government Education (ES) Principals and Inspectors in the three zonal Directorates that the serving principals are given up to end of the 2011/2012 academic sessions to defray their debts or risks sack.
''Those who cannot defray their indebtedness at the end of the 2011/2012 academic sessions will be relieved of their positions.''
Dr Atsu said those who retire from service but are known to have left such debts while in office will have their gratuity deducted at source to recover monies owed government.
According to her ,office head of service has been communicated on this as well as the office of the Accountant –General to implement the deduction whenever the retired principals’ benefits are due.
In the same vein former principals who were deployed to Local government Education Authorities and are indebted, will  from the commencement of the 2012 budget, have their salaries deducted to recover the various sums of monies owed the State Government. The board chairman said the board Accountant has been authorized to query and audit all schools across the state before the end of the session to make sure no school is owing government.
On school farm and local craft the board chairman said the board has created revenue sources such as remittance of one hundred naira per student for the proceeds of school farm and local craft as captured in the 2012 budget estimates of the board.
The discipline of teaching and non-teaching staff will henceforth be handled at the various levels of School, Local Government Area Education Authority (LGEA), zonal and at the board level. The essence is to reduce the incessant influx of teachers to the board to answer queries on issues that would have been handled at the school level.
The forum was also an avenue where the Principals were informed of the approval by government to re-introduce National Examination Council (NECO) to public secondary schools at the cost of eight thousand, one hundred Naira (N8100), outside photo album and other sundry charges.
