Confirming the spillage at Obio Ndon, the chairman House committee on environment, Mr. Kufre Etuk explained that since it has confirmed that it is crude oil, they will recommend to the state ministry of environment to liase with the federal ministry of environment to send experts to come to the site and carry out test to confirm if it is up to the quantity that they can allow companies to come in and drill the oil, adding that the crude oil has to pass through some processes especially the department of DPR that oversees the assessment of oil before it can be used. While urging the owner of the land where the oil was physically found Mr. Ndifreke Thomas Udom and the entire community to exercise patience, Mr. Kufre Etuk assured them that the fifth assembly which is termed ‘people’s assembly’ will not delay in making known what they have seen to the appropriate quarters for urgent actions in their favour. Also speaking the village head of Obio Ndon Chief Idongesit Edem hinted that the oil has affected the people of the area negatively pointing that they can no longer grow crops as they use to do and as well as constructing houses, explaining that any attempt to dig the ground will result in oil spillage. Separately, the former house member in the area Obong Elder Sunday J. Okoko thanked the committee for coming to confirm the oil which according to him has been in the area since February last year and appealed to government to grade the road leading to the area which has laid abandoned over the years. |
