Inactivity In Uniuyo As ASUU Ends Strike PDF Print E-mail

Despite the decision by the National body of Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to suspend its 60 day old strike which led to the closing down of universities across the nation, a check by The Sensor Newspaper yesterday revealed that although the University of Uyo gates were thrown open for members of the University community to go about their normal academic activity, nothing actually happened at the institution. Though the students who had stayed for too long at home were seen in large numbers early waiting for classes, the lecturers failed to show up.
When our correspondents visited some of the offices and lecture halls, they were deserted. While few staff were seen in their duty post, activities in the university community were generally dull.
Some of the students who spoke with The Sensor commended ASUU for calling off the strike, but regretted the distortion in the academic calendar of the university caused by the strike.
Iniobong Udoh, a 300 level Sociology student of the University of Uyo, however expressed hope that normal academic activities will resume in earnest by next week.
Attempts to speak with the leadership of ASUU, Uniuyo chapter proofed abortive as several effort to meet the Chairman of the Union was unsuccessful. The ASUU secretariat situated in the town campus of the university was under lock and key and nobody was found there to speak to the press.
